8 Things You Should Know Before Turning 40

When you're busy making plans, life happens. You suddenly become aware that you are becoming 40 and that a new decade is approaching. It's time to put all of the knowledge you have gained throughout your 20s and 30s to use.

I'd like to offer a few suggestions to help make the journey you're embarking on more enjoyable.

1. Ignore the others and focus on yourself.

You've matured enough to realize that it's up to you to make your own decisions in life. It shouldn't be necessary to subject yourself to criticism in order to feel better about yourself. Don't listen to what others have to say about it; just do what is right for you.

2. Let the soap operas handle the drama.

It has been shown that a combination of emotions, such as happy and melancholy, can enhance our mental health and give our lives more purpose. Nothing goes as planned, therefore what we choose to do with the result is what defines our resilience. Make an effort to be your best self, not just your "happiest" self.

3. Schedule time for your pals.

Create a priority for yourself by organizing that much-needed get-together. Even set aside time for it as "therapy time."

4. Perfection

A sense of empowerment and acceptance may come with the coming decade. Since we are not expected to be flawless, we should begin to feel at ease in our own skin. Years of attempting to meet unattainable beauty standards have damaged how others view our physical appearance. In any case, keep in mind that self-care might be the ideal ally on your road to acceptance.

5. Your possessions are simply the things you currently own.

Nothing compares to the rush of joy you get when you receive a box or return from the store carrying all of your most recent purchases.

You realize they're just a new pair of heels once you take them out of the bag and the newness wears off. Owning a home entails paying a mortgage, expenses, and additional cleaning tasks. All the thrill ultimately wears off. The goal is to DO more rather than HAVE more, especially if doing more involves assisting others.

6. Demonstrate your value.

Pitch fresh ideas to improve your company, become more involved in meetings, and quit holding yourself back. You can even request that well-earned raise from your boss. You may be shocked by what you are capable of.

7. Include sunscreen in your morning ritual.

The list of beauty supplies you require should be expanded if you dare to venture outside. Sunscreen ought to be first on that list. It will give you a pleasant glow, protect your skin from photoaging, and help you avoid that.

8. Get used to being addressed as "ma'am."

When you hear the phrase "ma'am," you might be in line at the grocery store, waiting for someone to use the elevator, or even enjoying your morning cappuccino. When you turn around, you assume they are speaking to someone else, but they are not. No matter when it occurs, you'll probably be surprised by it. Instead of overanalyzing it, it is preferable to see it as a gesture of respect.
