Azimio La Umoja one Kenya Alliance has today made good their threat to protest the removal of IEBC vice CEO Ruth Kulundu from office. The Vice CEO is allegedly being witch hunted by the CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan on orders from the Chair person of the commission, Wafula Chebukati and commisioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye. However the IEBC through CEO Marjan has defended itself claiming that they followed due course of the law and the reason she is being terminated from office is as a result of insubordination and threatening other members of the commission which is a violation of the code of conduct for IEBC employees. Kulundu is said to have called for a plenary meeting without the knowledge and approval of the CEO and gave the green light to the four dissenting commissioners, Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Justus Nyangaya and Francis Wanderi to hire lawyers to represent the IEBC during the supreme court hearing of 9th,august 2022.
This according to the commission was against the law as IEBC had already contracted lawyers to represent it led by senior Council and former attorney general emeritus Professor Githu Muigai. The matter resulted in a standoff in the supreme court and the court decided that the latter was the legitimate representative of the IEBC in its chambers and that the rest of the commissioners would be represented in their individual capacity.
Azimio legislators had issued threats to the commission to reverse their decision within 24 hrs . 3 days have since gone by and Azimio legislators and some supporters have held peaceful demonstrations outside IEBC headquarters at anniversary towers. This was however short-lived as police officers were swiftly at the scene and lobbed teargas at the demonstrators to break them off. This has resulted in a standoff in the city forcing business to shut down amid the rise in tension
