Police officers have launched an investigation into a case where inmates transferred to Mwea GK prison from Kamiti Maximum prison burnt down the facility's dormitory.
Confirming the incident, Mwea East Sub county commissioner Daniel Kitavi said the monday incident occured at 12 noon.
“After I was informed about the incident, I quickly called the county government of Kirinyaga fire fighters,” said Kitavi.
Kirinyaga county fire fighters under the leadership of John Kiama could not access the facility since the prison gate was too small for the fire engine truck to enter.
We watched as B2 dormitory was being consumed by the fire,” Kiama said.
Officers at the prison who denied an interview with Journalists said 58 prisoners were transferred from Kamiti Maximum prison due to protests.
In a show of refusal to be transferred, some of the inmates had refused to alight from the vehicles used to ferry them to Mwea GK prison.
