A court in Narok, Kenya has sentenced a 50-year-old man to life in prison for defiling and marrying a 10-year-old girl. The man, Saigulu Ololosereka, pleaded guilty to the charges in front of Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Phyllis Shinyanda.
Ololosereka was charged with defiling a 10-year-old girl and marrying her in violation of the law in 2019. Despite being warned of the seriousness of the charges, Ololosereka claimed that the girl's parents had given her to him for marriage.
Magistrate Shinyanda stated that the crime was grave and barbaric, and that the young victim had endured three years of abuse.
The girl had also undergone female genital mutilation and gave birth via caesarian section. The defendant showed no remorse for his actions.
The judge took into consideration the age of the victim, who was impregnated, and the fact that the man had been defiling the girl for the last three years. The judge stated that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar crimes.
Ololosereka was sentenced to life in prison for the first count of defilement and three years for the second count of early marriage, to be served concurrently.
The prosecutor expressed satisfaction with the verdict. Ololosereka has 14 days to appeal the sentence.
