Jedidah Wambui Weru travelled to America in search of greener pastures in 2018.
For the first few months, her life there was full of joy and she could frequently send her family photos of her happy moments.
In August 2020, she called her sister and informed her that she was set to wed an American man.
After the wedding, Jedidah discovered that the man lied to her that they had gotten legally married.
The family says Jedidah's problems began after the wedding.
She stopped communicating with them and her phone was always off.
Jedidah's friends on the other hand said that sometimes, she would call them while hiding. She always told them that her husband had banned her from using her phone to call family and friends.
One of her close friends revealed that one day, Jedidah called her but the man was standing close and listening to the conversation. When they tried speaking in Swahili, he ordered her to speak in English.
On 21st December 2021, Jedidah called her family, wished them a merry Christmas and sent them some money to use in the celebrations.
On 24th December, they received a call from her friend in the USA informing them that she was seriously sick and needed help urgently.
Calls to Jedidah went unanswered until 3 days later when her husband picked up and informed them that she was dead and he had already cremated her body. He told them that he would send the ashes.
Jedidah's family believes that her husband had a hand in her death since after some investigations with the help of Kenyan community in Seattle, they discovered that he had lied to them about cremating her body.
Kenyans in Seattle have joined hands with the family to seek justice for Jedidah. The case is still ongoing.
Jedidah's family is pleading with the government to help them bring her body back to the country and also investigate the cause of her death.
