TUKO Editor Jailed For Six Months By Court For Misreporting NYS Graft Case

Worrying news has today emerged as the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) has vowed to appeal the decision by a Nairobi court to jail a news editor for allegedly misreporting and publishing a story over the NYS graft scandal.

Magistrate Eunice Nyutu sentenced the Tuko editor to six months in jail or pay a fine of Ksh 50,000, insisting that the story had damaged the reputation of the witness and that publishing a defamatory story is punishable by law. All journalist have therefore been warned upon publishing misappropriate information.

The magistrate, despite the editor apologizing to the court saying that they pulled down the article, argued that the sentence will serve as a warning to other journalist against misreporting. This will serve a lesson to those journalist who likes publishing fake information by telling them that it is against the law.
