Protests erupted and continued for the better part of Tuesday evening in the Mlango Kubwa area of Nairobi following the alleged shooting to death of a man by police officers.
The victim is said to have died on the spot after a slay bullet that was targeted at a burglary suspect landed on him. The 29-year-old man's death led to long protests in the area with locals pointing fingers at the officer involved in the shooting.
Angry residents burnt tires and barricaded the busy Juja Road to protest the death of James Nungu Nziva who died after being hit by the stray bullet. The bullet was aimed at an offender who had snatched a mobile phone from the officer before taking away.
Police had a difficult time controlling the irate crowd. They were forced to use tear gas to disperse them and restored calm in the area.
Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the killing which has put the Police Service yet again on the spot over reckless shooting.
