Since March 2020, Kenyans have been enjoying transferring money from bank accounts to mobile wallets and vice versa at free of charge. This was a move that was made by the government in response to COVID-19 disease. And after being in action for around three years, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) announced the reintroduction of the charges that was to be in use beginning 1st of January this year. CBK directed all banks to charge customers in these transactions.
However, around one week after banks started charging their customers for the service, Court has reversed the move by CBK as it has temporarily stopped the increase in money transfer charges. This means that Kenyans will continue transferring money between banks accounts and mobile wallets for free. With the high cost of living in the country, this move by the court will cushion many from the heavy charges levied on these transactions.
