A 24-year-old man was sentenced to 90 years in prison after being found guilty of violently robbing, raping, and killing a Swedish missionary at Milimani estate in Kitale town two years ago. Chris Wanjala and Dominic Nyongesa, the accused, were found guilty of the heinous murder of Ms Lilian Bourcart, 74, who was doing charity work in the area as well as running a children's home. Kitale Chief Magistrate Julius N'garng'ar sentenced Wanjala to the stated jail term and postponed the sentencing of his accomplice until his age was determined. The decision will be issued on January 9.
Nyongesa claimed in court that he was underage at the time of the offense and is now 19 years old, but the court was aware that he was over the age of 20 during the proceedings.
According to court prosecutor Joyce Mumu, because the crime was a capital offense, the duo deserved the maximum sentence as a lesson and deterrent to others. Ms Philomena Chepkorir, 27, one of the deceased's employees, said that on the fateful day, she arrived at work around 8 a.m. and found the doors open, only to discover that her boss had been killed. "The deceased stayed alone and we were two workers but usually left for our respective homes after the day's work. "I called the cops, and they took the body to the mortuary," she testified.
