A Meru man whose picture went viral on social media after spending the night with the casket of his wife has been compensated by the court. Mwendwa was intercepted by police in May 2020 while en route to Meru for burial and his wife's body moved to the station where it stayed overnight.
His case attracted a large number of criticism to police officers who were deemed heartless after what they did to Mr. Mwendwa. However, on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, Meru High Court judge Edward Muriithi awarded Mwendwa 1.5 million shillings.
The Judge pointed out that police used excessive pressure in arresting and detaining Mwendwa who was on a trip to bury his deceased wife thereby violating his fundamental human rights.
The judge has further directed the Inspector-General of Police Mr. Hillary Mutyambai to bear the cost that is to be awarded to the affected family. Meanwhile, what are your thoughts?
