Egerton University student Edmond Ruto, who confessed to killing his campus mate and lover Cynthia Chelangat, has been jailed for 10 years.Ruto stabbed Chelangat to death before attempting to take his own life after she demanded they break up.They were both in their final years, with Chelangat's mother saying she is a single mother and would fundraise to educate her.Justice Joel Ngugi said that the murder was an example of toxic masculinity.

" I committed the henious act out of anger and I was in a state of temporary madness," he said after appearing before Nakuru High Court in his defence. It was reported that on the fateful day, he stormed into her room and locked the door from inside, protesting her intention to end the relationship and a heated exchange ensued. He stabbed her twice on the neck, stomach and later on her thighs. He then turned the knife on himself and stabbed his neck twice before falling unconscious. Neighbours managed to break into the room and rushed to the hospital, but Chelangat, a daughter of a single mother, did not make it.
