LGBTQ Activist Murdered In Kapsaret, Uasin Gishu County

On New Year's Eve, LGBTQ activist and model Edwin Chiloba was seen alive at a club in Eldoret, dancing and singing with friends. It is believed that after leaving the club, Chiloba attended a house party at an unknown location. However, two days later, his decomposing body was discovered in a metal box on the Kipenyo-Kaptinga road in Kapsaret, Uasin Gishu County.

On January 2, a 24-year-old freelance photographer from Nairobi was arrested in connection with Chiloba's murder. According to the Uasin Gishu County Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the photographer was with Chiloba at a house in Kimumu after they left the club, and a scuffle may have occurred that led to Chiloba's death. The photographer was reportedly seen by neighbors loading a metal box into a vehicle, which later contained Chiloba's body. The photographer is currently being held at Langas police station, and authorities are searching for two other individuals in relation to the case.

Chiloba, a fourth-year student at the University of Eldoret, was studying apparel fashion and design and was set to complete his studies in April. He was known for his activism and for openly expressing his gender identity, including by dressing as a woman and sharing images on social media. Last year, Chiloba survived a public attack that left him with facial injuries, including a large cut on his lips and bruises on his face.
