On Monday, June 7, Uasin Gishu Woman representative Gladys Boss Shollei praised President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move of appointing 34 judges. While speaking to Citizen TV, she said it was the right thing for the president to appoint the 34 judges whose appointment had been kept in waiting for so long. The 34 judges were appointed from a list of 40 judges which was presented to president Uhuru by Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Other six judges were rejected by the president. “It was the right thing to appoint the 34 judges because there are a lot of cases that have stalled at the Court of Appeal,” she said.
Shollei further supported the 34 judges for accepting to take oath of office despite other people advising them to refuse until the remaining six judges are appointed by the president. She said that it was their right to take the oath of office and therefore people should stop criticizing them for doing so. The judges will take up positions in the Court of Appeal, Lands and environment court and the Employment and Labour Relations court.
She insisted that it was the right thing for the judges to take the oath in order to rescue the Court of Appeal. According to her, the Court of Appeal has not been hearing and determining cases except for stay orders. She went further and slammed the president for going against the Constitution. She claimed the president had no powers to select who should be a judge and who should not. She insisted that the president should prepetition the Judicial Service Commission to take action if at all he has anything against the six judges that he rejected.
