It has been running battles between boda boda riders and police officers all day long at Laare Market in Igembe North Sub County, Meru County. It all started after angry boda boda riders from the area came out to demonstrate and speak against the surging police harassment meted on the boda boda riders by the police officers.
The police officers were forced to lob teargas to the angry boda boda riders after the protests turned chaotic following the closure of all roads linking Laare market to its outskirts including Antubetwe Kiongo, Mutuati and Maua. The boda boda riders burnt tyres across the Laare Maua road, Laare Antubetwe Kiongo road and Laare Mutuati road.
The boda boda riders decried abuse from police officers from Laare Police Station whereby the police officers keep towing their motorbikes for no apparent reason and thereafter forced to part with not less than Ksh. 5,000 to have each motorbike released.
The protesters said that the extortion by police has been ongoing for quite sometime but it escalated after the former area OCPD and traffic base commander Inspector Wambua were transferred to other places. According to the protesters, the OCS who is new at Laare Police Station is the one behind their suffering since he is the one who orders the police officers to harass and intimidate the boda boda riders.
Unfortunately, there was no responsible leader who appeared to listen to the woes of the protesters until late in the evening before the protesting boda boda riders dispatched to their homes.
