Chief Who Circulated Young Girl's Private Photos on Social Media Charged

Chief Kalimoi Shale of Wajir County was sentenced to 40 years in jail after he was found guilty of taking advantage of an 18 year old girl.

When the family of the girl threatened to file a case against him, he used his position in power to force the lady into an out of court settlement through Maslaha, a common cultural conflict resolution method widely used in North Eastern Kenya.

The Maslaha method is highly discouraged since it comprises the legal rights of the victim to get justice.

After abusing the young girl, he allegedly circulated her photos on social media, a crime that he was also charged for and sentenced to a separate 20 years in prison plus the abuse sentence of 20 years totalling to 40 years in prison.

The two sentences will run Co currently. He will also be required to pay the victim 500,000 Kenyan shillings as compensation for the emotional damage.
