A Chief in Wajir was been thrown into prison for 40 years after he reportedly raped an 18-year-old girl and distributed her nudes on social media.
The chief who has been identified as Kalimoi Shale used his position to force the victim into accepting an out of court settlement through Maslaha, a cultural conflict resolution common in the North Eastern parts of Kenya.
Sources indicates that he had raped the girl severally. The office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution reported that the chief went ahead to circulate nude photos of the girl after she refused to accept his sex advances.
According to the prosecution, the chief was sentenced to 20 years in jail for the offence of rape and another 20 years for distributing the photos on social media. Additionally, the chief was slapped with Ksh.500,000 fine as a compensation to the girl for the abuse she endured.
Kenyans have welcomed the sentence that was given to the chief. They have urged the relevant authorities to follow similar cases where young girls are being abused by people who are supposed to be taking care of them.
