“Maisha Imekua Ngumu Baba Utuokoe” Mt Kenya Residents Demonstrates Citing High Cost of Living

Residents of Olkalau town in Nyandarua county were on Monday, March 13 held anti-government demonstrations following Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya leader Raila Odinga's call for countrywide mass action over the cost of living.

While addressing the media in Olkalau town, residents blame the government for high cost of living that is currently experienced in the whole country.

“Maisha imekua ngumu sana tunataka bei ya Mafuta na Unga iteremshwe … Baba utuokoe Wakenya tunahumia” they lament.

Unlike past protests that quickly spiraled into violence and looting, demonstrators in Olkalau town, and areas surroundings were peaceful, instead the protesters sang and danced, and even mocked police officers who were keeping an eye on them.

In the list of the protesters' concerns is the high cost of living, high taxation, cost of education and tribalism among others.

“We will demonstrate every day to present this memorandum to the county commissioner. We will also go to the State Lodge. This is a peaceful demonstration and nobody should try mishandling our people. Our issues as outlined by our leaders must be handled,” one of the protesters said.

Nyandarua county is the first Mt Kenya county to set out anti government peaceful demonstration, citing high cost of living that has affects many Kenyans.

The mass action started a day after the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya leader, Raila Odinga declared the start of countrywide mass action as part of putting pressure on President William Ruto to yield to their demands on the cost of living, IEBC selection panel, among other reasons.
