Residents of Mbeere town in Embu County on Monday, 27th February, staged a protest, paralysing transport activities on the Embu - Kitui highway, over lack of water supply in the area.
The protesters, who blocked the highway with logs and stones, said that for the last one year local authorities have failed to address the water crisis in the area. It is reported that more than 5,000 households in Mbeere are affected by the water crisis.
The protesters, mostly women and children, are demanding that the government provide water to their homes so that they can access clean and safe water. They also want the government to address the water shortage in the area.
The County government of Embu has responded to the protest by deploying police officers to the area in order to restore order. The County Governor Martin Wambora has also urged the protesters to remain calm and allow the government to find a solution to the problem.
The government is expected to take immediate action to address the water crisis in the area. The residents of Mbeere town have vowed to continue with the protest until their demand for water is met.
