Former prison warden Benson Kimathi was given a sentence on Monday by Chuka High Court judge Lucy Gitari. According to the judge, Justice Gitari, all of the evidence presented in court established beyond a reasonable doubt that Kimathi killed 9-year-old Maribel Kapolon in September 2018 due to a strained relationship with her mother.
When she disappeared, Francis Otundo asked the girls' family for a ransom of Ksh. 500,000 before her body was eventually discovered in the Gitoro woodlands in Meru.
Francis was given a one-year release by Justice Gitari, the judge, after determining that he was merely an opportunist looking to swindle the mother and had no involvement in the girl's murder.
The judge freed the second accused after saying that his time in detention had taught him a valuable lesson. Francis Otundo allegedly called the girl's family days after she vanished and demanded a ransom of Ksh. 500,000 before her decomposing body was eventually discovered dumped in Gitoro woodland in Meru, and she was accused alongside Kimathi.
