Disadvantages Of Teeth Whitening

Current research about tooth whitening shows that it is safe and effective when manufacturer’s protocol is followed, yet there are risks of which the profession and users should be aware.

Among the most frequently asked questions is "does teeth whitening damage the enamel?" The conclusive answer is no, teeth whitening gel will NOT damage or harm your tooth enamel. Enamel is considered the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel consists of tiny tubules that can only be viewed under high magnification.

Bleaching products contain hydrogen peroxide that diffuses through the enamel. It breaks down the compounds that are causing the discolouration, known as chromogenic compounds, and your teeth become lighter.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

Teeth whitening can cause several side effects. Tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. However, Cleveland Clinic notes that gum irritation is usually caused by ill-fitting whitening trays (rather than the bleaching agent itself), and sensitivity and tissue irritation often disappear within one to three days of completing the treatment.
