More worrying news have been reported in Kisumu County concerning the Covid-19 situation. New details indicates that Kisumu County is already overwhelmed by the Covid-19 pandemic and that it has begun seeking referrals of coronavirus patients to hospitals in the surrounding counties.
As a result of straining in the isolation facilities, Siaya County has begun receiving referral of Covid-19 cases from the neighboring Kisumu County.
This comes following a worrying trend in the Covid-19 situation in Kisumu County. Over the past one week cases of Covid-19 have been at a rise in Kisumu. This County in the Lake Victoria Region has even seemed to be overtaking Nairobi and Mombasa County in terms of number of infections reported.
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital is the largest isolation center in Kisumu County. Sadly the hospital is already filled up. Worrying news indicates that the hospital is already struggling due to low oxygen supply to sustain all the patients. The CEO of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Dr George Rae has added that the situation at the hospital is worrying saying that they were even struggling in terms of space adding that all the beds were already full.
The Kisumu County government has also been forced to seek other small isolation centers in order to handle the current situation. More worrying news is that the positivity rate in Kisumu County according to the Ministry of Health is 31.4 percent.
Elsewhere, the Covid-19 infections in Kisii County have also increased which is now being blamed on the by-election that was concluded in Bonchari Constituency. It is speculated that there might have been a community transmission of the Covid-19 during the mini poll.
Dr Richard Onkware who is the Director of Public Health in Kisii County stated that the new surge in infections might be entering the county from the already overwhelmed Kisumu. Dr Richard Onkware also raises eyebrows over the Indian variant which had been reported in Kisumu County a couple of days ago.
