COVID-19: Ways You Are Weakening Your Immunity

Though not known to many people, most of the things you are constantly doing could be ruining your immune system. They are things you may not be giving much thought but they matter. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), all the things you do daily are going to influence your health in a particular way, either for better or for worse. 

Here are the ways you are ruining your immune system;

1. You don’t sleep enough

According to the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when one gets to sleep, the body gets involved in various processes that ensure the body is recharged and repaired. When sleeping, the body creates inflammatory proteins known as cytokines and other disease fighting antibodies. Failure to get enough sleep therefore could mean that the Delta variant would bring you down. 

2. You don’t workout enough

Failure to move the body by exercising can interfere with the body’s capacity to fight disease. It is advisable that you take 30 minutes daily to exercise to keep your body in the best form to fight infections like the COVID-19. Make sure that you don’t overdo the exercises while at it. When you don’t give your body time to rest it can hinder your immune system from doing its work.

3. You take too much sugar

According to Mayo Clinic, sugar causes inflammation and can weaken the white blood cells and decrease immunity. To be safe, avoid taking drinks and foods that contain too much added sugars likes sodas, cakes and cookies. It is advisable that you eat fruits as they contain natural sugars that will keep you healthy. 

4. You don’t drink enough water

When one is dehydrated, the immune system is strained and that gives it hard time to perform its function. According to WHO, dehydration reduces the secretion of antimicrobial substances that fight infections. Besides that, water transport oxygen and nutrients to other body tissues keeping them healthy and ready to ward off infections. 

5. You have not cleaned your phone in a long time

Different studies show that a mobile phone can hold more bacteria than a toilet seat. That means you will be walking with more pathogens that can harm if you don’t clean it. It is recommended that you clean your phone at least once a month to be safe. 

6. You spend most times alone

Failing to maintain great social connections with family and friends can expose you to chronic stress that interferes with your immune system. Based on a study published in the Antioxidants and Redox Signalling journal, being lonely can affect the body by exposing it to inflammation. Be in touch with family and friends to reduce stress.
