Tonsils - Causes, Symptoms and Diagnosis

Tonsils are located on each side of the back of the throat. Their main function is to fight infections from entering the body by producing white blood cells. Tonsils are prone to infection and they are referred to Tonsillitis when they get infected.

Tonsillitis are very common to children and they are very contagious. Tonsillitis symptoms include;

1. Very Sore throat

2. Difficulty or pain while swallowing

3. Bad breath

4. Fever

5. Scratchy-sounding voice

6. Earaches

7. Stomachache

8. Headaches

9. Stiff neck

10. Poor appetite

Treatment may vary according to the type of tonsillitis. There are three types of tonsillitis;

Acute Tonsillitis- They last less than 10 days. They can improve by home treatment and other treatments like antibiotics.

Chronic Tonsillitis- They last more than acute tonsillitis.

Recurrent Tonsillitis- They reoccur 5-7 times in a year.

Some Tonsillitis may go on their own but some require treatment. Diagnosis will differ from one person to another according to the doctor after physical examination.
