DELTACRON: The newest COVID-19 variant in town

The Kenyan government has joined the bandwagon and done away with the mandatory wearing of masks. However, this might have been a sudden call considering the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, the Deltacron Variant.

As its name depicts, it is a combination of the Omicron and Delta variants.

The new variant ‘Deltacron’ was discovered in early February 2022. Based on the findings by Leondios Kostrikis, a professor in the University of Cyprus, the recombinant features of the new variant include those of Omicron GRA/BA.1 and Delta GK/AY.4.

The intensity of its outbreak and effects is yet to be established. According to Professor Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia, the new variant shares its antigens with two other variants to which people are growing immune. Deltacron is the newest threat to humanity but its dangers are yet to be known.

Scientists are in the race to understand how it spreads, how fast and if it comes with more severity than its preceding variants.
