Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o on Monday got a vote of confidence from none other than his wife Dorothy Nyong’o, who took time to praise him for fully backing her initiatives.

Speaking at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) while donating food to a section of cancer patients at the health institution, Mrs. Nyong’o thanked her husband for supporting her initiatives, which mostly aim at uplifting members of the public.

The food donation initiative, known as Food for Good is being spearheaded by the County First Lady in collaboration with JOOTRH, Rotary Club of Kisumu and the African Cancer Foundation, targeting cancer patients who receive care and treatment at the hospital.

She said the idea behind the initiative which came into being in September this year, arose from the fact that cancer patients are suffering at this point in time, largely due to challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We realized that cancer patients are really suffering during this pandemic and especially with regard to food because they are not getting enough nutrition which is very important while they are going through their treatment. Chemotherapy is very heavy in the body, and so we realized that we need to support them and boost them,” she said.

But before that, she took some time to thank her husband, Governor Nyong’o for his unwavering support.

“I bring greetings from Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o. He is the man behind the woman. He gives me full support with this project,” said the First Lady as a section of those present clapped and cheered.

“The Governor is fully behind this initiative, he supports it. He has cancer very close to his heart and all non-communicable diseases as well as health in general. And from his personal experience, he knows how important nutrition is to getting recovery from cancer,” she added. The Governor is a cancer overcomer.

She reminded the patients that food is a very critical component as they continue with their medication. “Food can be medicine, or food can be food and food can be poison. And what we want to encourage you is cancer patients is to consider food as your medicine so that in the future, medicine does not become your food.”

The First Lady said the donation which went to 50 households can support the beneficiaries for a month. 100 other patients have been supported since the initiative started in September.

JOOTRH Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Okoth said that their dream is to reach out to all the cancer patients who receive treatment at the institution. The CEO indicated that in a year, they treat 6, 800 cancer patients at the facility.
