Excessive Painful Menses.

Menstrual flow should take a maximum of 5-7 days whereby a woman should atleast use 3-5 pads fully soaked. There are some instances however, when there are excessive and very painful menstrual periods. Most of these fall under one group of disorders called Abnormal Uterine Bleeding.

There are several uterine anomalies that can cause Abnormal Uterine Bleding including; uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, Endometriosis, endometrial cancer and cervical cancer.

Another cause is due to blood coagulation disorders. These make the process of clotting impaired and may result to excessive bleeding. Examples of such diseases include; Von Willebrand disease, hypoprothrombinemia, fibrinogenopenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. (DIC)

Another potential cause are certain types of medications. Medicines that can affect the coagulation system may have a great impact in worsening this condition. Blood thinners eg heparin and warfarin are examples of anticoagulants. This make it harder for blood to clot hence prone to easily bleeding. Other drugs include Tamoxifen, Antidepressants and Antipsychotics.

Lastly, some family planning methods can have a role to play. Depo-provera injection, given every 3 monthly has a high risk of causing excessive mensturation. Other methods include Intra-uterine device like the Copper-T.

Seek medical attention if you notice prolonged painful menses before complications arise. Health is the greatest wealth. Thank you all.
