How gout can result in joint damage if left untreated.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a build up of uric acid which is a waste product found in blood,that creates sharp crystals in the joints leading to swelling and sharp pain.


Causes of gout are:

*Obesity,high blood presaure,diabetes.

*Kidney problems.

*Eating foods that cause a build up of uric acid.

*Drinking too much beer.

*Hyperurecemia which is an accumulation of uric acid in the blood and is the leading cause of gout.

The body accumulates uric acid during the breakdown of purines which are chemical compounds found in foods like meat.

There are certain factors that increase the risk of a person getting gout like:

*Age and sex- it tends to occur more often in men as women have less uric acid levels and affects persons between 30-50 age bracket.

*Certain medications that increase uric acid levels like hypertension drugs and beta blockers.

*Medical conditions-persobs with other conditions like high blood pressure and chronic diseases are at a higher risk.

*A family history of gout.

*Diet-eating a lot of red meat and drinking beverages sweetened with fruit sugar.

A limited range of motion, inflammation and redness,intense pain especially in the joints,ankle,toe, foot,knee, lumps,stiffness or swelling are some of the symptoms of gout.

Gout can result in complications like recurrent gout,kidney stones and a formation of tophi which are deposits of urate crystals which form under the skin forming nodules.Untreated gout can also result in joint damage and deformity.
