Today the Health Chief Administrative Secretary in the ministry of Health Mercy Mwangangi has revealed that 840,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine have expired.

In addition, she said if the public does not go for the jab as expected, in less than three weeks one million doses will expire bringing in to total of around two million of the COVID-19 vaccine lost.

Giving the reason for this as wastage of the donated doses as a result of slow uptake of Covid-19 vaccines in Kenya it "The lifting of some mandates led to complacency among us causing the loss of these doses,” Dr. Mwangangi stated.

The following countries topped on the list of dose expiry. Nakuru county had the highest at 35,000 followed closely by busia at 27,980, kajiado 25770, kakamega 12870 and finally Lamu 11730.

She has urged the county leadership to use any means possible to encourage members in there respective counties to take up the vaccine from the first dose upto the booster one, “We call on county governments to do all they can to ensure that all vaccines in their facilities are administered. MoH is working with county government & partners to do everything possible to ensure that the vaccine doses are utilized before expiry,” she added.
