There are times when you can get an urge to visit the kitchen late-night hours after you finished your supper. Experts recommend that you should at all not resist that urge when the piece of chicken in the kitchen is calling your name. This is because this habit has several positive and negative effects on your health, including the quality of sleep.

Here is what happens when you eat before bedtime;

1. You could fall asleep faster

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are foods that can help you sleep without trouble. Foods such as bananas, walnuts and almonds contain melatonin, a hormone that can help one sleep. Besides melatonin, these foods are also rich in zinc and magnesium, minerals that can help one have better sleep.

2. It might help control blood sugar

Snacking before going to bed can regulate blood sugar. According to the American Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for people suffering from type 2 diabetes, having a snack of protein and fibre can assist in regulating the blood sugar overnight. Protein can help regulate the blood sugar by keeping it stable.

3. You could have indigestion or acid reflux

One disadvantage of eating just before bedtime is that it can cause you discomfort if you suffer from acid reflux. This is because eating and laying down immediately can worsen the situation causing indigestion. If you have a reflux problem it is advisable that you eat a few hours before going to sleep to avoid any problems at night.

4. You will go to bed full

This is obvious. Having something to eat before going to sleep will allow you to sleep on a full stomach. However, if you eat too much then you will be uncomfortable and your sleep will be disturbed.
