Management of people with diabetes

Its a metabolic disease casuse by high blood sugar level.

It affects people of all ages both adolescents and adults.

Types of diabetes include ;

Type 1

its autoimmune whereby the pacrease cells producing insulin are destroyed.

Type 2

it occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin leading to build up of sugars in the body .

Gestational diabetes

It mostly occur in pregnant women ,it can be either be induced or pre-existing .

General symptoms;

•Increased hunger

•Weight loss

•Frequent urination

•Blurry vision

•Thirst urge

•Fatigability

•Wounds that don't heal

Symptoms in both genders include;

Men

•Decreased libido

•Poor muscle strength

•Erectly dysfunction

Women

•Risk of urinary tract infection

•Dry itchy skin

•Yeast infection

Investigations

1.Hba1c, measures the average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months

2.Fasting blood sugar test

3.Random blood sugar test

4.Glucose tolerance test

Complications

1.Delayed wound healing

2.Neuropathy (Nerve damage)

3.Retinopathy

4.Poor vision

5.Kidney damage (Nephropathy)

6.Skin conditions

7.Hearing problems

8.Alzheimer's disease

9.Cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis.

10.Depression

11.Dementia

Treatment

Injectible insulin ,it exist in four types namely;

1.Rapid acting

starts to work within 15mins and its effects lasts for 3 to 4 hours

2.Short acting

which works at around 30 mins and it effects begins at 6 to 8 hours

3.intermediate

it last for 12 to 18 hours

4.Long acting

it works a few hours after injection and lasts for 24 hours .

Injection sites

•Abdomen

•Upper arm

•Thigh

•Lower back

•Hips

•Gluteal region

Oral medications

Alpha glucosidase inhibitors

1.Slows the body break down of sugars and starch ,example acarbose

Biguanides

Reduces the amount of glucose the liver makes ,it includes metformin (Glucophage)

Dpp-4 inhibitors

Improve blood sugar by preventing it from being too low I.e linagliptin and saxagliptin

Meglitinides

It stimulate the pacrease to release more insuline.

Examples includes Neteglinide and Rapaglinide.

SGLT2 inhibitors

Release glucose into urine.

Drugs used is dapagliflozin

Prevention

1.Eat less food rich in carbohydrates and sugars

2.Exercise regularly

3.Cut down all alcoholic drinks and smoking.

4 .Avoid junky foods as this may lead to high cholesterol levels.

NOTE

Always keep tract of your blood sugars.

Ensure that you stay hydrated all the time.

This is because increased urination leads to thirstiness.

In case of decreased sugar levels ensure that you take glucose or foods with sugars.

This would help raise the hypoglycemia state.

Take your medications in time without failing even a dose .

Leafy green vegetables are extremely nutritious for diabetic people.
