Heartburn Home Remedies

Heartburn is a burning feeling in your throat or chest and it occurs when stomach acid travels into your esophagus, the part of your body that carries food from your mouth to stomach. Whether you often feel it or just once in a while heartburn can be uncomfortable and difficult to deal with. The following simple home remedies can help provide relief.

1.     Apples

Apples are healthy snacks that are a rich source of minerals like, calcium, magnesium and potassium which are helpful for lowering stomach acid. An apple after a meal or before bedtime may help neutralize acid by creating an alkaline environment in your stomach.

2.     Water Melons

Water Melons are refreshing natural sweet snacks. They are a good source of magnesium which is a good remedy for acid reflux. Always check for ripeness of the melon before you buy it as the melon does not continue to ripe once it has been cut from the vine. Eat four to six chunks depending on how much discomfort you have. Do not heat the water melon as heating reduce its effectiveness against acidity.

3.     Egg white

This is a good source of protein with low acidity which makes it a good option for heartburn. Egg white is rich in vitamin B6 that helps our bodies metabolise certain amino acids which in turn reduce heartburn.

4.     Potatoes

They are highly alkaline which can help reduce acidity. Peel a thin piece of raw potato and chew or make potato juice. Do not take more than one piece.

5.     Bananas.

Bananas are low acid fruits that help with acidity by coating an irritated esophageal lining and therefore helping to stop the discomfort. They have high fibre content hence strengthening your digestive system that help ward off indigestion. Bananas have pectin which help move the stomach contents through your digestive tract ensuring that food does not stick around as it continues to generate acid.

6.     Spinach

Spinach is a leafy green vegetable that is rich in calcium which increases bone health and it’s highly alkaline helps the stomach reduce acidity levels. Spinach can be added to recipes or smoothies in order to get the most out of its potential soothing effect on heartburn.

Bottom line

Frequent exposure to stomach acid irritates and damages the esophagus. This can lead to problems such as difficulty in swallowing. After trying  home remedies and still you have frequent heartburns , consult a doctor. There are several treatments that can help.
