The Covid 19 pandemic is striking us hard. It seems the third wave of Covid is the ravaging through the country without sparing anyone, whether rich or poor.

Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has informed his public that the Covid situation has gotten out of hand. Through his official Twitter handle, the Governor informed citizens of the grim situation we are in via a post made a few hours ago.
"NIKUBAYA: All our Machakos Level 5 hospital’s 15 ICU beds & additional 12 HDU beds (Total 27) full with SEVERE Covid patients. All Machakos 42 ICU/HDU beds with oxygen points also full. People are waiting for others to die to get a bed. MASK, avoid BARS, be WISE. HAKUNA VITANDA." reads his post.

Mutua stated that all the 42 Intensive Care Unit and High Dependency Unit beds across the county are fully occupied. The bed occupancy is such that 100 percent of the patients have severe Covid 19 leaving no beds for other patients.

In the same thread, Mutua further informs us that a fully kitted ICU bed meeting Ministry of Health standards has a price range of 6.5 million shillings. This comes invthr background of a negligent population that is reluctant to observe simple rules such as hand washing, social distancing and use of face masks.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union chairman Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda expressed his worry with the recent trend where the country is losing many skilled doctors to the disease yet there are no beds for advanced Covid 19 disease. Currently ,the positivity rate stands at over twenty percent and the infectivity rate is rising.
This means any patient sustaining severe injuries from the accident prone Mombasa Road will have to search for a bed elsewhere. Any patient with a complicated medical condition that requires HDU or ICU services will have to seek the services in private facilities. Theatre services may be hit too as the two are interdependent on each other.
The message from the Governor is that we can't simply continue acting normally. The issue of disease prevention is a personal issue and as such everyone should take responsibility for their actions.
