Mutahi Kagwe convenes crisis meeting over Omicron virus variant

Kagwe said he convened the National Emergency Response Committee (NERC) to assess Kenya's readiness to deal with the spread of a new Omicron virus type discovered in South Africa.

According to the CS, as Kenyans prepare for the Christmas season, Kenya may see the return of a statewide curfew and lockdowns. The country also expects a surge in visitor numbers.

The CS, on the other hand, was evasive about putting the lockdown in place and enforcing other public health precautions.

On Monday, November 29, Kagwe told the Business Daily, that he can't tell till the NERC meeting.

Nonetheless, he asked the public to wait for the results of the NERC's discussions, noting that the committee will conduct a news conference on November 30 to reveal the new measures.

On Friday, November 26, the acting Director General of Health, Patrick Amoth, announced that all travellers traveling in Kenya from South Africa must go through quarantine. Following the discovery of the South African variety, the immigrants were also required to undergo further testing upon entry.

Kenya is yet to join Rwanda and the United States in putting travel restrictions on countries in Southern Africa.
