Shortage of Crucial Covid-19 Drug As a Dosage Costs Ksh 200k

There is a shortage of Tocilizumab a Covid-19 drug needed by seriously ill patients. The drug increases chances of survival and reduces the need for mechanical ventilation for critically ill Corona virus patients.

The shortage has come at a very critical period since the numbers of infected people are increasing on a daily basis.

Unavailability of the drug makes ICUs and ventilators the only option for these patients yet they are also not enough. Nairobi hospitals' intensive care units are full and most of the patients are in need of oxygen.

The counties that are affected by Tocilizumab shortage are Nairobi, Machakos, Kiambu, Nakuru and Kajiado, Nairobi is the leading county.

The drug is out of stock in most pharmacies and available in some private hospitals but those who managed to buy it had to part with huge amounts of money.

A pharmacist at Kenyatta National Hospital revealed that the pharmacy has not had the drug since last year.

As reported by the Nation, one dosage of Tocilizumab goes for Ksh 200, 000 in a certain private hospital and a patient needs two doses.

Dr Fred Siyoi, the Deputy Registrar at Pharmacy and Poisons Board said that the nations manufacturing the drug are hoarding it for their citizens.
