#Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is associated with abnormally high blood sugars over a prolonged period of time.Glucose is the body's main source of energy,body cells take up this glucose for the body's energy needs. The disease can be divided into two diabetes melitus type 1 and type 2.In type 1 diabetes the body destroys the insulin producing beta cells.Type 2 diabetes is an inmpairment in the way the body regulates blood sugars. Insulin is the hormone responsible for the uptake of this blood sugars into the body's cells thus keeping the bodys blood sugars constant.Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by the pancreas,an organ located behind the abdomen.Symptoms of diabetes include;feeling hungry often,yeast infections,frequent thirst,dry skin,malaise,slow wound healing,weight loss without trying. The disease has major long-term effects on the body such as damage to small and large blood vessels in the body which can lead to problems in various body organs if the blood sugars aren't well controlled.
