"Petrol accident at home in 1996 changed me and this made me be discriminated against in Iraq," Monica Wambui Gachie, a burn survivor, has said.
"I got a cleaning job in Iraq. The moment my employer noticed that I have burns, it became an issue. The wife of my boss started mistreating me. When I said I wanted to quit the job, that's where problems began. It got to a point where the husband tore my clothes and called their friends to come and see me."
"They locked me in a room for a week. I was naked with a pant and a bra. This is where the friends came to see me, to reportedly see the monster they have been living with. My boss once pointed a gun at me. They took everything from me.
When I got my phone, I reached out to my friends who contacted my agent. That is how I was rescued. Nilirudi Kenya 2019 after working in Iraq for two and a half years," she said
Monica says she has started reaching out to burn survivors to encourage them not to hide but embrace themselves.
