Vaccination Might be Slowed or Stopped Due to Dwindling Reserves, MoH

The Ministry of Health is worried that if the ongoing supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine is depleted, then they might have to stop the vaccination programme. Kenya received its first batch of about a million vaccines from the Oxford Pharmaceutical but since then, no other consignment has come in except the 75000 Sputnik V doses.

The Ministry had an arrangement with an Indian pharmaceutical company called COVAX but since India's rise in cases have shot up exponentially, the company was forced to focus on the people at home first. The company is now unable to meet the local as well as the international demand for its vaccine.

The government now vaccinated about 30000 to 40000 a day and if this numbers remain constant, the government could be looking at a depletion of the reserves in a matter of days. There is a shipment of about 2.5 million doses expected in the country by second of May. These doses have to arrive or Kenya will be starting at a vaccine crisis.
