The moon has been there since the dawn of time and throughout those years, some people have even worshipped it. The people’s fascination with the moon has led to different studies to see what impacts it has on humans. It is true that the moon influences life but does it have implications on one’s life? Well, here are the ways the moon influences your health;
1. The moon and menstrual cycles
Have you ever wondered why some people still refer to the periods and menstrual cycles as moon cycles? There are many people who are convinced that there is a way of coincidence between the moon phases and women menses. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the inclination that the menstrual cycles and the moon are connected comes from the concept that both a menstrual and moon cycle last 28 days.
Some researches have also discovered that there is relationship between phases of the moon and differences in the extents of melatonin which is a sleep regulating hormone.
2. Moon and sleep
There is a belief that the full moon disturbs sleep. When the full moon is seen most people report that they do not catch good sleep at this time. There are no one extensive study to support this but small studies from different parts of the world indicate that the full moon can disrupt one’s quality of sleep. A research published in Sleep Medicine journal examined the sleep quality in 319 participants and discovered that during the full moon participants did not get quality sleep.
3. Moon and mental health
English words referring to insanity and madness like “lunacy” have their origin from the moon. The words could mean there is some influence the moon has. A Mayo Clinic research conducted in 2009 shows that psychiatric hospitals admit more patients during the full moon than any other time. This means that there is some relationship between the moon and mental health.
