Charity Ngilu Over The Moon After The County's Textile Factory Gets International Commendation

Kitui County Governor, Charity Ngilu is a proud leader after the textile factory she started in the county few months ago attracts admiration and commendation across the world.

Taking to her Twitter account on Wednesday 8th April, Charity Ngilu shared the good news with citizens.

She expressed her happiness that the factory swiftly started making COVID-19 protective gear immediately to save lives of Kenyans.

She went on to share a post about the factory, Kitui County Textile Centre - KIKOTEC published in the Washington Post dated 8th April, 2020.

"Kitui County Textile Centre @Kicotec continues to receive admiration and commendation from across the world. Here is a feature by The Washington Post @washingtonpost THE KENYAN FACTORY THAT TRANSFORMED INTO A SURGICAL MASK ASSEMBLY LINE OVERNIGHT."

The article narrates that the factory's ability to produce 30,000 surgical masks in a certain day is an achievement and a step in the fight against coronavirus in the country.

Workers in KIKOTEC work in shifts of eight hours to ensure that the demand for the masks is met. This also ensures they are not crowded hence maintaining social distancing.

Before each worker is allowed in to the premises, their temperatures are checked to ensure safety is guaranteed.

They also do not commute at their respective homes as the county government has offered a dormitory next to the factory.

Despite the post commending on the number of masks produced, it praised the governor's efforts in creating employment to the residents as 80% of the workers are women who never went to school.

The article further disclosed that the governor's daughter and son in-law were among the first ten cases to be confirmed with the virus in the country after jetting back in to the country from Spain.

In a past press briefing, Mutahi Kagwe, the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Health stated that the factory was among those approved to produce quality masks.
