List of 15 Nairobi Hospitals Launched By Uhuru in Just 8 Months under NMS

With a population size of about 5 million people and Kenyatta National Hospital being the main health facility for 47% of residents, Nairobi County has for a long time struggled with catastrophic health outcomes and disease burden. However the health sector has received a boost since the inception of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, NMS under the Universal Health Care UHC pillar of President Uhuru’s Big Four agenda.

In August 2020, Uhuru laid ground for the construction of 24 hospitals in the 17 sub counties of Nairobi with attention to informal settlement areas like Kibra. This has led to construction of 28 new health facilities comprised of Level 2 &3 caliber and refurbishment of another four existing centers.

Uhuru has commissioned 15 of the facilities so far with the latest being on 29th September 2021 whereby Kibera Level 3 and Undugu Highrise Level 3 Hospitals were launched in an event attended by the Former PM Raila Odinga and NMS Director Lieutenant General Mohamed Badi. The two facilities are projected to serve a catchment population of roughly 490,000 residents. In addition, they will aid in decongestion of the choked Mbagathi Hospital.

In addition, the NMS has enrolled over 326,000 vulnerable people for NHIF. “66, 000 households have already started enjoying the services 5,600 of them from Kibera.” NMS wrote in a recent Facebook post.

“UHC is one of the four key development blue prints with an aspiration that all persons in Kenya will be able to use the essential services they need for their health and wellbeing through a single unified benefit package, without the risk of financial catastrophe.” The post read.

NMS leadership led by Badi hopes that the robust strategy to avail healthcare services in the county will alleviate it’s health burdens including the high maternal mortality and 17% malnourishment rate among infants.
