Motorcycles have become an indispensable part of public transport across the world. In African countries, public transport motorcycles are referred to by different names such as okada in Nigeria and boda boda in Kenya.
Many people, young and old, are involved in motorcycle riding as a means of transport and business. We have seen a great rise in the use of motorcycles, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, with home deliveries becoming the norm.
Boda boda related accidents have been a thorn in the flesh for Kenya’s Ministry of Transport which has implemented numerous measures to curb the accidents but all have been in vain. With regards to boda boda accidents, it is safe to say that the Coronavirus outbreak was a blessing because, since the start of the pandemic, the new normal has seen the reduction of boda boda accidents because of the reduced boda boda operations as had been directed by the government.
Now interesting news has emerged that the recently renovated Mathare Hospital in Nairobi has dedicated a while floor for boda boda related accidents. This incentive follows after the hospital recorded a high number of boda boda cases in recent months in Nairobi County. Isaac Mutua, who is the Hospital’s chief administrator said that the board decided to dedicate a whole floor when a refurbishment proposal was accepted by the County government.
