Meru First Lady Priscilla Murungi Want Mothers to Take Responsibility Over Teens Pregnancy

Meru County First Lady Madam Priscilla Murungi has called upon with mothers with teens to be on the forefront to fight agaist teens pregnancies.

Ms Murungi said that the women are the primary caregivers in families, to take to forefront in guiding, protecting and counseling the teenage girls and boys who are facing the danger of early pregnancies and other perilous behaviors such as drug abuse, as a result of being away from school due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Speaking on Monday morning when she presided over the launch of Twaweza Program to distribute food and other aid items to vulnerable women across the County aimed at reducing severity of the pandemic crisis, Madam Murungi noted that both the boy and girl child face equal risk due to the advances in technology which have exposed them to many dangers.

“As mothers, we also need to realize that the dangers of child defilement can very well be perpetuated by close family relatives and friends and as such, I call on you to be extremely vigilant and speak regularly to the children to ensure they are safe even as we navigate through this pandemic with them at our homes,” said First lady.

Her call comes at a time when there are various reports indicating that thousands of underage girls in the country could be forced into motherhood as result of the prolonged stay at home due to COVID-19 disease.

She announced that the aid distribution program will be spearheaded at Ward level through the County Government structures to help widows and other vulnerable women and their families, facing the hardest of economic times at this time of the pandemic.

County legislators led by Chairperson for Meru County Assembly Women Caucus Secondina Kanini and the Chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Health Mworia Martin Kiongozi pledged to support the First Lady’s program to ensure the critical aid reaches the most deserving at the grassroots.
