Why it is important to keep constant blood sugar levels to avoid hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.

Blood glucose is a sugar that the blood stream supplies to all the body's cells to supply energy.

A glucose tolerance test can be done to get the real blood sugar levels in the body whereby at 2 hours a sugar level of 140mg/dl or lower is considered normal,140-199 indicates prediabetes,200mg/dl or higher indicates diabetes.

Hypoglcemia is a condition characterised by low blood sugar levels in the body.

Fasting hypoglycemia mostly affects persons with diabetes,Addison's disease, cancer, sepsis, chronic kidney disease,heart failure or certain medicines.

Reactive hypoglycemia occurs from too much insulin production after taking a meal.

Common causes of hypoglycemia include;

*Taking too much insulin or diabetes medication.

*Not eating enough.

*Postponing or skipping a meal or snack.

*Drinking alcohol.

Excessive hunger,fainting,fatigue,shakiness, nausea or vomiting,mental confusion, excessive sleepiness,pale skin, pins and needles, slurred speech, tremors are some common symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Hyperglycemia refers to high blood glucose levels in the blood.This condition can be caused by not using enough insulin for diabetics,having an illness or infection,being inactive,using certain medications such as steroids,not injecting insulin properly or using expired insulin.

Headaches,thirstiness, blurred vision, fruity smelling breath,nausea and vomiting, coma,confusion,dry mouth are some common symptoms of hyperglycemia.

If blood glucose are consistently high for a long period of time a condition without enough insulin in the body a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis can result which is a medical emergency.

Hyperglycemia hyperosmolar state occurs when a person produces insulin but it does not work effectively.

It is important to maintain healthy blood sugar levels in the body to avoid more serious problems like dementia,coma,heart attacks and diseases,seizures,death,bone and joint problems,teeth and gum infections,eye problems.Photos courtesy of Google.
