Governor Lee Kinyanjui has said there is a sharp a rise in number of mental health issues involving medical workers. He said the latest involves a Nakuru doctor who is battling for his life after attempted suicide while his two children were found dead on suspected homicide. He said this is a sad and terrifying situation.
Lee said medical staff work in an environment that expects them to take care of others at all times. He said the government system is not designed to perceive the healthcare worker as a patient and this is the beginning of the problems.
The governor said in the coming days they shall work with experts in mental health to draft a policy on how they can help the healthcare workers to cope with their work situation. He said it would include identification of persons needing help as they are largely unaware and the provision of a friendly support system during treatment.Lee said in the meantime a little show of concern to the health workers will go along way.
