Blood donation is when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and used for transfusion. It is a gift that anyone can give another person,the gift life.

Blood donation helps reduce risks of heart attack,cancer,burn calories and help on weight loss. Donating blood helps those with internal and external bleeding due to injury,sickle cell disease and are undergoing a transplant.

Sometimes a person can experience side effects after donating blood, they incude weakness,feeling faint, nausea and dizziness. However these symptoms disappear within twenty four hours . They mostly occur for those with low weight, young donors and those donating for the first time. These side effects can be minimised by drinking a lot of fluids and eating a well balanced diet. Red meat,spinach, iron_fortified juices and cereals can boost a person's iron intake.A person donating should eat at least three hours before donating blood and avoid smoking in the day before donation. You can't donate if you have cold, flu, sore throat, stomach bug or any other infection.

If you recently had a tattoo or body piercing you can not donate for six months from the date of procedure . This is because blood donated by such people carries the risks of being infected. Women may not give blood during and up to three days after their period During regular donation you will give around 479 ml of whole blood, about eight percent of average adult blood volume. The body replaces this volume within 24 to 48 hours.
