Very little knowledge is known of the Box Jellyfish invertebrate which goes by the scientific name Chironex fleckeri. This marine stinger that inhabits the northern coast of Australia, Mediterranean Sea, Hawaiian waters, South African coast, and the indo- pacific waters is distinguished by its blue and transparent colour. It subsequently gets this name from the square shape of its medusae.
This invertebrate's tentacles grow up to 10 feet long. The tentacles emerge from its lower four corners. These tentacles are used to deliver very powerful venom that paralyses delicate organs such as the heart, skin and the nervous system.
Box Jellyfish weigh approximately 4.4 pounds and have a lifespan of one year. It has a speed of six metres (20ft) per minute. This creature has 20 simple eyes that are not used for viewing but detecting light and dark. Other of its four compound eyes for viewing make it to have a total of twenty-four eyes.
Since 1954, scientists have recorded about 5,567 deaths from these creatures. The most recent being in February where a 17-year old Australian boy succumbed to its venom. When it manages to sting you, there is a minimal chance of you surviving due to its toxin spreading rapidly. You may not be able to swim to the shores, but be left in a state of shock, heart failure or death.
The few survivors who have managed to escape its wrath, have complained of experiencing considerable pain for weeks and even ending up with lifetime scars at the point of contact. Until date, scientists have been unable to explain how these organisms are processing their responses and stimuli with the absence of a brain and a central nervous system. Since the creature has no heart, it has no blood too. It respires by absorbing oxygen directly from water and excreting carbon (iv) oxide and ammonia through diffusion.
