Jaundice, more commonly known as jaundice, is a manifestation present in a number of benign or more serious pathologies. It is characterized by a yellow coloration of the skin, mucous membranes and the whites of the eyes.
In jaundice, a yellow coloration can affect the skin, the mucous membranes (the walls lining the inner part of some organs) of the mouth or genitals and the conjunctiva, which is the white of the eye (conjunctival jaundice).
This last localization is often the first to appear, even the only one clearly visible, especially in dark-skinned individuals.
In adults, several causes can be at the origin of jaundice. Jaundice is due to two main causes: liver disease, or a blockage in the flow of bile, details the hepatologist.
Liver diseases include hepatitis (sometimes caused by taking medication) or cirrhosis. The presence of gallstones, tumors of the liver or pancreas can also be the cause of jaundice. We are talking here about conjugated bilirubin jaundice.
