HIV basically Stands for Human Immune Virus. It simply means a type of a Virus that attacks the human Immune System. Mostly HIV virus is spread through having unprotected sex with an infected person, blood transfusion with Infected blood, sharing sharp objects such as syringes with Infected people and lastly it can be transmitted from mother to child during birth or breastfeeding.
More common tests done to test for presence of HIV Virus in your blood include.
1. HIV nucleic acid tests - this test will look for the actual virus in the blood it is mostly known as the viral load tests and it involves drawing blood from a vein. It is used when someone recently has had a high risk exposure. Here the results may take several days. However it can detect HIV Virus between 10- 33 days of Infection after exposure.
2. An Antigen Antibody Test - it basically tests for both HIV antigens and antibodies. This takes around 30 minutes for results to show. This can detect HIV only after 18 to 90 days of HIV AIDS exposure. This is why it is recommended to take a HIV test three months after exposure.
3. Antibodies Tests -this is the most commonly done type of HIV test. It basically involves a finger prick where rapid tests are used. Other practioneers can use oral fluid to quickly test for presence of HIV antibodies. This commonly takes between 10 to 15 minutes for results to show. This test will detect for HIV virus from 23 days after exposure to 90 days.
So it is important to note that immediately after exposure to HIV the results may not be accurate and one Might be required to repeat the test after three months
