Home remedy for ankle pain

Ankle pain refers to any type of pain or discomfort in your ankles. This pain could be caused by an injury or by a medical condition, like arthritis. You’re more likely to have ankle pain if you: Are over age 65. Play sports or do activities that involve jumping, side-to-side movements or quick changes in direction. Carry extra weight or are obese.

Whenever you experience an ankle pain you should rest and avoid putting weight on your ankle. Try to move as little as possible for the first few days. Use crutches or a cane if you have to walk. Putting a bag of ice on your ankle for at least 20 minutes at a time, with 90 minutes between icing sessions will help reduce swelling and numb pain.

Wrap your injured ankle with an elastic bandage. Don’t wrap it so tightly that your ankle becomes numb. If possible you should keep your ankle raised above heart level on a stack of pillows or other type of support structure. You can also try to sleep with your foot elevated at night. Taking over-the-counter drugs, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen helps relieve pain and swelling.

To prevent incidences of ankle pain when playing sports you need to wear proper shoes that provides adequate support for your feet and ankles.You should also maintain a healthy weight because carrying extra weight puts excess pressure on your joints, including your ankles.

Once your pain subsides, gently exercise your ankle by rotating it in circles. Rotate in both directions, and stop if it begins to hurt. However if you experience extreme swelling or bruising, along with the inability to put weight or pressure on the ankle without significant pain, you should consult a doctor.
