HIV is one of the diseases with great public health concerns in any country. The viral disease does not have a cure and it kills if not managed. Gone are the days when people living with the deadly disease did not live long due to unavailability of supportive medications. People with the disease currently live longer thanks to the available medications to keep the virus low in the body.
In Kenya, HIV is mostly prominent in western parts of the country with Nyanza being largely hit. According to the ministry of Health (MOH), the county with the highest infection rate is Siaya followed by Homa Bay County then Kisumu County. Other counties in the top 10 include Migori, Busia, Nairobi, Vihiga, Kitui, Kakamega and Kisii in that order.
The prevalence of the disease is high in the highlighted counties than others partly due to social - cultural practices like no circumcision, wife inheritance and promiscuity. The situation is changing drastically since these traditions are fading by the day with rigorous screening, testing, community education and counseling in those areas. Since the advent of Corona virus, attention given to HIV and other chronic diseases went down and this was a big challenge to people living with the disease.
